Minimally Invasive Surgery Total Knee Arthroplasty
It is an operation that removes deformed joints and replaces original joints to special synthetic metal and special plastics when there is pain, movement disorder, deformity and gait due to trauma, such as degenerative or rheumatoid arthritis of the knee joint.
2. Operation Indication
Operation indications are as below.
: Severe pain and deformity that does not improve even with conservative treatment for more than 3 months, person who are over 60 years old with movement disorder, degenerative arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing arthritis, osteonecrosis, post-traumatic arthritis.
3. Advantages of TKRA
The best thing is that disappears of severe pain and correct the shape of bent legs. After surgery it could be done with any difficulty of daily living, and after recovery period light exercise can be done.
4. Operation Procedure
There are 2 types of procedures, one is replacement femur and tibia articular joints(IF cartilage of patella is in good condition when observed in the operation field.), the other is replacement femur, tibia and patella articular joints. The knee is incised to cut articular cartilage, and artificial joints are used to change the articular facet.
5. Lifetime of knee arthroplasty surgery
It’s not permanent because of using artificial articular facet. It is generally known that about 90% use 15 years(10-20years) on average.
6. Total Knee Arthroplasty with Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS-TKA).
Operation tool of MIS
Incision line after MIS-TKA (about 8~10cm)
The MIS-TKA has a much smaller incision area than the conventional method, and it has the advantages of less pain after surgery, rapid wound healing and faster rehabilitation. In order to perform this operation, a dedicated surgical instrument for minimally invasive incision is needed instead of a conventional surgical instrument, and an experienced medical staff is required.
Infection of operation wound is the most mortality and dangerous complications among the post operation complications. The cause why this complication is occurred may differ depending on the patient’s existing disease (such as diabetes, etc..), the cleanliness of the operating room or medical staff, and the general condition of the patient after surgery. Among them, what can do to reduce infection dramatically can be prevented by wearing a surgical dress for a joint surgery like a space suit at a surgical site or if you perform surgery in a clean room(Laminar flow room).
8. Postoperative Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation after surgery are variation. Starting with QSE(Qudariceps Setting Exercise) exercise immediately after surgery, use CPM(Continuous Passive Motion) equipment to bend the knees, and walking with walkers or crutches.
